There are over 20,000 web sites that contain information about water quality and/or water quantity issues. These sites are of varying quality but many of them are excellent and provide important information about water to consumers. Highlighted below are some of the better sites to obtain information about water:

From the land grant institutions:

Site: www.pnwwaterweb.com/

PNW RegionThis is our regional water web site developed jointly by the five land grant institutions in the Pacific Northwest (Northwest Indian College, Oregon State University, University of Alaska, University of Idaho, and Washington State University). This site contains information about our approaches to address water issues, our water programs, relevant water contacts at land grant institutions, links to appropriate water sources, and downloadable publications. All of the PNW WATER UPDATES that have been produced over the last four years are also found on this site.

Site: www.usawaterquality.org/

This site is the home of the national water program and is developed jointly between the land grant universities and USDA-CSREES. This site describes the scope of the national water quality program and provides links to the 10 regional programs (including the Pacific Northwest). This site contains information about national facilitation water projects, Extension education water projects, integrated research and extension water resource projects, and the water resource portion of the National Research Initiative. Of particular interest are highlighted success stories dealing with specific water resource problems. This site also contains information about the annual National Water Conference, including abstracts of presentations of previous conferences and the program for the 2007 meeting, which will be held in Savannah, Georgia next January.

From Water Resource Research Institutes in the Pacific Northwest:

Sites:
Alaska: www.uaf.edu/water/
Idaho: www.boise.uidaho.edu/
Oregon: http://water.oregonstate.edu/
Washington: www.swwrc.wsu.edu/

The water resource research institute sites listed above contain relevant water resource information for individual states in the Pacific Northwest. Each Institute highlights results from past and current research projects. Each site contains appropriate links for further resources.

From Federal Agencies:

Site: http://www.epa.gov/OW/

This site is maintained and operated by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water. This site contains information about EPA’s water programs. There is extensive information on: (1) groundwater and drinking water, (2) water science, (3) wastewater management, and (4) wetlands, oceans, and watersheds. Extensive water related materials on laws and regulations, publications, training resources, and educational resources can also be found at this site.

The Project
Land Grant Universities, Water Research Institutes and EPA Region 10 have formed a partnership to provide research and education to communities about protecting or restoring the quality of water resources. This partnership is being supported in part by the USDA’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension System (CSREES).

Our Goal and Approach
The goal of this Project is to provide leadership for water resources research, education and outreach to help people, industry and governments to prevent and solve current and emerging water quality and quantity problems. The approach to achieving this goal is for the Partners to develop a coordinated regional water quality effort based on, and strengthening, individual state programs.

Our Strengths
The Project promotes regional collaboration by acknowledging existing programs and successful efforts; assessing program gaps; identifying potential issues for cross-agency and private sector collaboration; and developing a clearinghouse of expertise and programs. In addition, the Project establishes or enhances partnerships with federal, state and local environmental and water resource management agencies, such as by placing a University Liaison within the offices of EPA Region 10.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) maintains this site which contains information about water resources of the USA. The USGS’s water resources mission is to provide water information that benefits the Nation’s citizens. Information contained on this web site includes: publications, research data, maps, and water applications software. This web site also contains information about USGS water resource programs and current regional studies.

The Water Quality Information Center site is developed and maintained by the USDA’s National Agricultural Library. The Water Quality Information Center (WQIC) provides electronic access to information on water quality and agriculture. The Center collects, organizes, and communicates the scientific findings, educational methodologies, and public policy issues related to water quality and agriculture.

The USDA-Natural Resource Conservation Service developed and maintains the National Water and Climate Center. The Center’s purpose is to lead the development and transfer of water and climate information and technology which support natural resource conservation. This web site contains information about water supplies, SNOWTEL data, SCAN technology, and GIS maps.

National Water Quality Program Areas

The four land grant universities in the Pacific Northwest have aligned our water resource extension and research efforts with eight themes of the USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension System.

  1. Animal Waste Management
  2. Drinking Water and Human Health
  3. Environmental Restoration
  4. Nutrient and Pesticide Management
  5. Pollution Assessment and Prevention
  6. Watershed Management
  7. Water Conservation and Agricultural Water Management
  8. Water Policy and Economics
CSREES is the Cooperative States Research, Education and Extension Service, a sub-agency of the United States Department of Agriculture, and is the federal partner in this water quality program.
