Our regional research and Extension conference, Groundwater Under the Pacific Northwest—Integrating Research, Policy, and Education, will be held November 2-3, at the Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington.

Because of the importance of ensuring adequate water supplies, this year’s Biennial Regional Research and Extension Water Quality Conference will focus on groundwater issues in the Pacific Northwest. Our two-day conference is packed with information relating to a broad array of groundwater-related topics, including groundwater quantity and quality, surface and groundwater interaction, hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, management and policy implications, and integration of science, education, and policy. What makes this conference truly unique is that many of these concepts are demonstrated with regional examples from La Pine, Walla Walla, Umatilla, and the Southern Willamette Valley Groundwater Management Area.

CONFERENCE GOALS
  • Provide participants with a holistic understanding of the current science, policy, and management of Pacific Northwest groundwater resources.

  • Strengthen connections between research, extension, regulatory, and technical assistance groups.

  • Identify critical research and information needs required for successful groundwater management.
PRE-CONFERENCE ITEMS
  • On November 1st, both a pre-conference workshop and pre-conference field trip will be offered.
Field Trip:
Clark County Groundwater Tour

This conference offers you the ability to stay current on the latest technical, social, and legal issues essential to managing water resources in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to the oral presentations, a poster session will provide opportunities for exchanging ideas and networking with colleagues. While focusing on regional issues and solutions, the conference will begin each morning with a thought-provoking keynote presentation by a prominent national speaker. They will help shed new light on the challenges and opportunities for integrating science into decision-making.

So come and join the dynamic atmosphere of this year’s conference and be prepared to share your own experiences with other professionals in the PNW. You can obtain more information and register for the conference at: www.swwrc.wsu.edu/conference2005/index.html.

The Project
Land Grant Universities, Water Research Institutes and EPA Region 10 have formed a partnership to provide research and education to communities about protecting or restoring the quality of water resources. This partnership is being supported in part by the USDA’s Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension System (CSREES).

Our Goal and Approach
The goal of this Project is to provide leadership for water resources research, education and outreach to help people, industry and governments to prevent and solve current and emerging water quality and quantity problems. The approach to achieving this goal is for the Partners to develop a coordinated regional water quality effort based on, and strengthening, individual state programs.

Our Strengths
The Project promotes regional collaboration by acknowledging existing programs and successful efforts; assessing program gaps; identifying potential issues for cross-agency and private sector collaboration; and developing a clearinghouse of expertise and programs. In addition, the Project establishes or enhances partnerships with federal, state and local environmental and water resource management agencies, such as by placing a University Liaison within the offices of EPA Region 10.
