| The Livestock, Poultry Environmental Learning Center (LPELC) program sponsors monthly webcasts for interested individuals with the uplink originating from Iowa State University. PNW 178: Beach Watch Program Receives Major Award
|
| This update highlights the national award received by Washington State University's 20-year old Beach Watcher program. This program has trained over 1,000 citizens in Washington. In recognition of this outstanding public engagement program the Universities Council on Water Resources (UCOWR) chose to give the program the "Public Service and Education" award at its annual conference. PNW 177: Water Management in Idaho Potatoes
|
This update provides some useful data on water management practices in potato production. Based on a recent grower survey a majority of Idaho potato producers do the following: 1) irrigate fields with sprinklers, 2) use feel and appearance of the soil as the prime determinate of when to irrigate, 3) use dammer-diking and basic tillage for erosion control, and 4) keep written records of water management. PNW 176: Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in Drinking Water
|
| This update highlights PPCPs and their occurrence in drinking water supplies. Pharmaceuticals are widespread in our nation's waters as over 100 different compounds have been found. However, to date EPA has not set standards for any of these products in drinking water and there is no evidence that any of them pose a health threat to humans. PNW 175: The State of Drinking Water
|
| This update highlights consumer attitudes and the status of drinking water in our four-state region. Based on our regional survey, we found out that 76% of the residents get their drinking water from a municipal (includes both community and public) water system. Conversely, 24% of the region’s residents get their drinking water from a private well or private surface water source. PNW 174: Water and Land Use in the PNW Conference
|
This update highlights our 5th biennial regional water conference titled “Water and Land Use in the PNW: Integrating Communities and Watersheds.” Held on November 4-6, 2009 at the Skamania Lodge in Stevenson, Washington the conference was regarded as a huge success by the participants! By focusing on regional challenges and opportunities for sustainable growth and ecosystem protection, the 3-day event was able to draw over 200 scientists, decision makers, and planners from the PNW region. PNW 172: Pacific Northwest Watershed Groups
|
This update provides a snapshot of watershed groups in the PNW based on a 2009 survey. Over 80 percent of watershed group members viewed their groups as successful. Based on this survey, most watershed groups are vibrant and believe that they have been successful in their mission.
