PNW 160: Using Green Manure Crops to Reduce Synthetic Pesticides
|
This update highlights field studies in southern Idaho that investigate the potential of biofumigants to replace synthetic soil fumigants to suppress nematodes, soil borne diseases, and weeds in potato cropping systems. The biofumigants in these studies are plants from the Brassica family -- rapeseed, canola, and mustard. If successful, synthetic pesticide use can be reduced and water qualtiy protected. PNW 155: Washington State University's Shore Stewards Program

| The WSU Shore Stewards Program is a voluntary citizen education and stewardship program that engages individual shoreline residents and homeowner associations in Puget Sound-friendly property management practices and activities. Since its 2003 start, the program has expanded to eight counties and includes over 1,000 Shore Stewards. Over 500 scientists and professionals attended this conference which hosted over 300 oral and poster presentations and seven major water-related symposia. PNW 153: Using Pesticides Correctly

| The Extension Services in the region meet the challenge of keeping plants free from pests by producing a Weed Management, Insect Management, and Plant Disease Management handbook. Each of these handbooks contain between 500 and 700 pages of the latest information on plant protection chemicals (pesticides) that can be used on hundreds of plants grown in the region.
